This spring, many of our 6th grade students particpated in the “BarrioEdProject” with Dr. Edwin Mayorga and his students from Swarthmore College. The pupropse of the project was to help our students learn new research and leadership skills through a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) framework.

This was the first year the project started at Key School and the first experience the project had working with middle schoolers! The curriculum was called “Santuario Nutritivo/Nourishing Sactuary,” and the students worked together with the college students to answer many questions such as:

  • What does is mean to have sactuary?
  • How does Sactuary look different within us as individuals and collectively within our schools and communities?
  • What practices and actions can we make to claim sactuary in our lives and our communities?

We look forward to continue our partnership with the “BarrioEdProject” and the students at Swarthmore!
